The finishing process can make or break your project and choosing the best method for coloring and protecting your project can be difficult. Oil or water based? What does the word “varnish” actually mean?Let Kevin Southwick, a nationally renowned finishing expert and contributing editor for the former American Woodworker magazine, remove the mystery and provide the knowledge you need to apply a successful finish. When you know the fundamentals of finishing, you can achieve the best results with the least amount of effort. Kevin Southwick
For over 25 years, Kevin Southwick of Southwick Furniture Conservation has enjoyed repairing, restoring and conserving fine furniture and heirloom antiques for private clientele. Having been fortunate to study with the Senior Furniture Conservator with the Smithsonian Institution, Don Williams, he has often worked with both the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minnesota State Capital on a wide variety of restoration projects. Through this relationship, methods of treatment developed and published by Mr. Southwick have become trusted criteria for furniture renovation projects at the Capital. The fortune of studying with Bob Flexner, author of the book “Understanding Wood Finishing”, has inspired Kevin to work hard to help others find their way through the difficulties involved in producing reliable and beautiful wood finishes. In classes designed for both professionals and hobbyists alike, Kevin has been sharing his understanding of wood finishes, application methods, repair materials, and touch up techniques for many years. Having written numerous articles published in several woodworking magazines, he is now very excited to share his knowledge and expertise with your group.
