Jovan C. Speller is a Minnesota based artist, curator, and arts administrator originally from Los Angeles, CA. For over 15 years Jovan has had a dedicated career in the arts.  Her work – visual, textual and performative – interprets historic narratives through contemporary discourse. Her research-based practice is centered around elevating, complicating and inventing stories that explore ancestry, identity, and spatial memory – making the intangible tangible and the invisible visible.

Jovan is currently an artist resident at Second Shift Studio Space in St. Paul, MN, focusing on expanding her art practice and experimenting with installation and sound works. She is a recipient of a 2018 McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, a 2018 Next Step Fund Grant, a 2016 Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship, and a partner recipient of a 2014–15 Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Community Partnership grant. Her photographic works have been published and exhibited in various exhibitions throughout the nation.

She holds a BFA in photography from Columbia College Chicago and studied art at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Exhibition Description:

Relics of Home is a multidisciplinary exhibition utilizing photography, text, installation, and sound to examine origin stories – real and imagined.

From the artist:

This work is a journey of research and reconciliation. I look into the past, upon the histories of Black people in this country – I look into the gaping ambiguity of what is the beginning of Black identity. I attempt to conjure the ‘who’ that we were before we were stolen, transported, sold and exploited. At least, that’s where I began. Swallowed by the missing and forgotten ancestors and traditions. Where I have arrived is a different place entirely.
