Enjoy the freedom and supple qualities of oil painting with a palette knife as you learn to paint an abstract landscape from one of your favorite photos. The workshop will feature technique and landscape demonstrations with hands-on explorations in the morning, and in the afternoon, student work from photo reference.

Starting an oil painting kit can be spendy, so feel free to bring what you have, or please let me know if you need help to round out your supplies. Easels and tables will be provided.

Please bring the following:

•Some photos of your favorite landscapes(look for drama, contrast, and distance).

• Notebook and pen for taking notes.

• Paper towels

.•A painter’s palette, a double palette cup, a“diamond-shaped” palette knife, and at leastone spatula-type palette knife If you are able please bring a variety of palette knives to experiment with.

•Weber Odorless Turpenoid (the blue label).I run a “closed turp” studio, so we”ll only be using a small amount in a palette cup versusan open brush-washing can. Different brands have different handling, drying time, and odor qualities, I’ve found Weber Odorless Turpenoid works best overall.

•Winsor Newton painting medium or similar (1/2 turpenoid and 1/2 linseed oil), or linseed oil.

•Bring two lightly toned canvases or canvas panels (around 11” x14” in size) — You’ll be using one to experiment with different techniques, and one for your final painting.To tone the canvas, thin a pea-sized amount of Old Holland Raw Umber paint (or similar) with turpenoid on your palette, paint it on your canvas, and then spread it with circular motions using a paper towel moistened with turnpenoid. Work the surface until your canvas is the color of blonde wood (or the color of the wood frame around a blackboard) and the tone is even. If you’d like help with this, please let me know and we can arrange a time.

•Brushes — Bristle and Sable flats, small, medium, and large sizes to lay in your ground and supplement your palette knife technique. Whatever you have should be ok.

•Oil colors — Winsor Newton and Rembrandt are good quality affordable paints and mostly what I use. Overall, I believe you can’t go too wrong with any brand exceptfor student-grade paint. Following on the next page are good colors to have for the workshop. Please feel free to bring what you have, and keep in mind that this could be a good opportunity to use the odd colors you have in your collection!
