About the Exhibition
I’ve traveled extensively in Asia and studied brush painting in Japan. One thing that has always captivated me is the elongated composition of scrolls as well as their lightweight and display versatility. I also appreciate the kind of fleeting atmospheric marks of many traditional Asian drawings/paintings. Upon discovering the process of marbling, I was hooked with the quiet study and acceptance of irregularity that mastery of it entailed.
Thus, I have often drawn, painted, printed and marbled on large scroll format for over two decades. I rarely set out to make something specific—I simply select some colors that I feel drawn to that day and work intuitively. There is always movement on the surface of the thickened water and I operate in communion with this.
This batch of scrolls that I pulled for this exhibition suggested autumns lustrous exuberance that I imagine is as lovely in the Midwest as it is in the forests of North Carolina.
Dr. Erin Tapley received undergraduate and terminal degrees in Art and Education from Skidmore College, the University of Alabama and the University of Iowa. She has received awards as an artist and an art educator including a Fulbright Grant, three National Endowment for the Humanities Grants, and a Teacher Incentive Grant from the National Art Education Association. She has completed artist residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Ragdale, Valparaiso, Archetopia and Centrum.
Selected exhibitions from the past decades include solo shows at: Tennessee Technical University, Hothouse Gallery in Chicago, Hopkins Center for the Arts in Minneapolis, West Liberty State College, Hickory NC Art Museum, Idaho Falls Art Museum and St Cloud Art Center. Dr. Tapley has also completed over sixty large-scale installations in galleries and communities nationwide. Printmaking and fiber art often inform these endeavors. She has traveled to over 26 countries on five continents to explore culturally-specific artforms.
About the Materials
My scrolls are typically about 5’ long by almost 2’ width. They are done on a durable cotton-based paper with high-pigment acrylic making them: water, light and tear -resistant. They work well in narrow vertical or horizontal space of homes/offices. They can also be used as table runners, mantel decoration, fans or for decoupage.
